Workshop
Behavioral Parent Training: Approaches for Helping the Parents of Strong-Willed Children
Description
Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) refers to a variety of theoretically grounded, evidence-based interventions for caregivers of children with oppositional, aggressive, and/or unruly behaviors. Such approaches use behavior therapy principles, such as clear expectations, modeling of positive behavior, and consistent positive and negative consequences, to improve parent-child relationships and reduce problematic behavior. This workshop will familiarize participants with the basics of BPT by reviewing programs developed by Sheila Eyberg (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy), Rex Forehand and Robert McMahon (Helping the Noncompliant Child), Russell Barkley, and others. An overview of BPT’s history will be followed by a detailed discussion of common principles and techniques.
The bulk of the workshop will focus on specific methods for training and coaching parents in behavior management strategies. Time also will be reserved for demonstrating these strategies, which include differential attention, behavior charts, daily report cards, time out, and response cost. Most BPT interventions were developed for children ages three to 12, but some adolescent programs exist, and will be discussed in lesser detail.
