Introduction to Family Therapy
Description
This workshop covers the basic concepts and practice of psychotherapy from a family systems perspective and explores the clinical implications of shifting from an individual to a family-relational framework. Topics include: engaging the family; understanding the organization of the family system and its relevance to presenting problems; formulating a systemic hypothesis; understanding individual behavior in a family context; the collaborative stance of the family therapist; and the importance of the socio-cultural context to family life. The workshop’s interactive format will provide opportunities for active participation. Content will be explored through conceptual presentation and discussion, exercises, role-play and videotaped examples of the application of family therapy concepts and techniques.
