Workshop
Working with Parents of Adolescents in Family Therapy
Description
Most therapists dread working with parents of troubled adolescents. By the time they come to therapy, parents generally feel helpless, scared, angry, hurt and ridden with guilt and shame. As a result, they are often highly critical of their teenager, and may seem to have given up. This workshop will focus on the challenges that parents face as they attempt to meet the changing needs of their adolescent. We will introduce techniques for uncovering the beliefs, expectations, fears and personal vulnerabilities that make it difficult for parents to maintain a positive connection. We will also demonstrate how to help parents and teenagers repair their strained and broken bonds. These will be illustrated through DVD case presentations.
