Divorce and Family Mediation Program
Ackerman’s innovative program is offered in partnership with the Center for Understanding in Conflict. This program offers opportunities for basic and advanced training in divorce mediation. The faculty includes two attorneys and a senior Ackerman therapist, all of whom are practicing divorce mediators. The advanced program uses the format of the Institute’s clinical programs.
Basic Mediation Training
This core preparation for becoming a practicing divorce mediator teaches the essential techniques of mediation and covers the legal, financial and psychological concepts needed to help couples negotiate the terms of their separation. The course uses an active blend of lecture, role play, discussion and videotape analysis.
Dates: 5 sessions; Wednesday- Friday, March 14-16, and Thursday-Friday, March 22 and 23, 2018
Time: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Faculty: Marc Fleisher, JD, Elana Katz, LCSW, and Katherine Eisold Miller, JD
The Center program has been approved under Part 146 by the New York State Unified Court System’s Office of ADR Programs as 24-hour initial + 16-hour case-type specific combined training (Divorce). Please note that final placement on any court roster is at the discretion of the local Administrative Judge and participation in a course that is either approved or pending approval does not guarantee placement on a local court roster.
Advanced Mediation Training
Trainees have the opportunity to observe and analyze cases mediated by a faculty member and seen through a one-way mirror and participate in the development of the approach for each case. In addition, participants analyze videotaped case material and engage in problem-solving discussions in advanced practice issues.
Time: Wednesdays, 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Faculty: Marc Fleisher, JD and Elana Katz, LCSW
The Ackerman Institute recommends graduates of our advanced mediation training to a mediation mentorship program through our partnership with FamilyKind and to internship opportunities through our relationship with the New York Legal Assistance Group.
