Improving Your Skills as a Couples Therapist
This course will focus on the various methods therapists can use to help couples reconnect and recover from despair and frustration. Ellen Wachtel, who is widely known for her work with couples and families, will demonstrate how to bring out the best in the couple by doing therapy with an actual couple in view of the class. The course will include discussion of the interventions used and will highlight methods for dealing with the impact of each person’s intergenerational history on the relationship.
The approach is integrative and thus interventions will derive from psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral and systemic perspectives. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss their own work. Topics covered will include getting couples to be less blaming; motivating couples to take concrete steps to improve their relationship; keeping sessions solution oriented; helping couples build on whatever positives in their relationship might still exist; and getting each individual to actively work on his or her emotional difficulties.
This course is open to therapists who have some experience working with couples.
