This eight session course will help professionals understand the unique issues that families face raising a child with special needs such as LD, ADHD, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, or sensory processing disorder. A family resilience framework will be used to understand the impact of family beliefs, stressors, supports and coping resources on family adaptation and child performance at home and at school.
The participants will be given the tools to become partners with parents and apply a family systems perspective in home-based, educational or clinical settings. The learning strategies include discussion, videotapes, experiential exercises as well as case, program and systems consultation. The instructor will share her clinical, research and policy related experience to describe themes and lessons learned.
