Practical Techniques in Working with Adolescents and Their Families

Participants in this class will be introduced to the model that we have been developing in Ackerman’s Adolescents and Their Families Project. Our belief is that the adolescent’s transition from childhood to adulthood largely depends on the quality of the connection the adolescent is able to maintain with his/her family.

We will demonstrate how to open up communication around sensitive issues, change conflictual family patterns, examine values, beliefs and practices that block change and establish positive interactions that lead to workable solutions. Based on this model, participants will learn interventions for resolving the issues that adolescents typically present with, including substance abuse, suicidality, depression, truancy, school failure, etc.

Short and specific readings, role playing, videotapes and clinical cases presented by participants are used to detail the basic concepts in our approach and facilitate discussion of the many dilemmas, questions and challenges that therapists face when working with adolescents.
