Engaging Substance Abusing Families in Treatment: A Systemic-Motivational Approach

More than 50 percent of people with substance abuse problems refuse treatment. Even for those who do accept treatment, long term adherence often is challenging.

Two factors that have proven effective in improving both treatment engagement and adherence are:

  • active involvement of the family as early as possible in the treatment process
  • the use of motivational interviewing techniques.

In this workshop we will review the basic concepts and phases of the Ackerman Systemic-Motivational Model of substance abuse treatment, and use video and case history material to demonstrate how systemic-motivational techniques are applied during the assessment/engagement phase of treatment.
