Raising a child with challenges such as ADHD, learning disabilities, Aspergers syndrome or autism,
or self-regulatory problems is not “parenting as usual”, and therapists must understand the unique
issues that these families face. Using a resilience framework, participants will explore family
stressors, supports and coping resources, and the relationships among them. Particular attention
will be given to the family’s appraisal of the situation and family beliefs that can impede or promote
the child’s development and family adaptation. Videotapes will be used to illustrate how to help families
move through the grief process, address the co-parenting relationship, and navigate the special education system.
