Founded in 1960, the Ackerman Institute for the Family (AIF) is one of the premier institutions for family therapy in the United States. The Institute serves diverse families at all stages of family life by offering a wide variety of programs that address a broad array of issues and concerns. Ackerman is also one of the best-known and most highly regarded training facilities for family therapists.
Lead Foundations Instructor
The position of Lead Foundations Instructor requires a deep knowledge of the history of ideas and practices of family therapy in the context in which they developed. It further requires the ability to critique these schools of family therapy from a current postmodern perspective, most notably social justice. Furthermore, the lead teacher will have clarity in conveying which aspects of the earlier schools have been adapted into the Ackerman Relational Approach (ARA).
On the practice level of the ARA, the lead instructor is expected to introduce basic interviewing methods: relational questions, bringing forth organizing questions around the presenting problem, interviewing for multiple perspectives, and learning to formulate a relational hypotheses. The ARA will be provided to all candidates who are given an interview.
The lead instructor will also teach the importance of Self of the Therapist. The significance of inequities in its many insidious representations will be made explicit in theory and addressed when it occurs in the Foundations class. To this end, the lead instructor will be skillful in utilizing group dynamics to create a generative learning environment.
This is a 30-week course running from September 2019 to mid-May 2020. The lead instructor will have a teaching fellow assigned to them.
- Has successfully completed 2 years as Teaching Fellow at or has taught Clinical Seminar, Live Clinical or the Externship at Ackerman; or has taught an equivalent family therapy course outside of Ackerman for at least 2 years.
- Preferably has video of their recent work to show their thinking about working clinically.
- Two letters of recommendation from an Ackerman Foundations Instructor or outside equivalent faculty.
