Sold Out The Heart of Couple Therapy: Key Principles for Enabling Couples to Change

This workshop will focus on a variety of methods therapists can use to help couples reconnect and break out of patterns that have lead to a frayed relationship. Topics covered will include how to motivate couples to make the changes that will get them “unstuck,” how to convert complaints to longings, and how to help couples expand their sense of what is possible.

Dr. Wachtel will examine the importance of “choice points” in enabling the couple to build on whatever positives in their relationship might still exist and describe a way of working with the individual “legacy” issues that each person brings to the relationship that enables the couple to provide one another with a corrective emotional experience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Change “complaints” into wishes, and make the relationship more gratifying
  • Use choice points to build on strengths
  • Learn methods of working that increase a couple’s motivation to make changes that lead to more gratifying relationships.

Presenter:

Ellen Wachtel, JD, PhD, is the author of The Heart of Couple Therapy: Knowing What to Do and How to Do It; the self-help book We Love Each Other But…; and Treating Troubled Children and their Families, Family Dynamics in Individual Psychotherapy (with Paul Wachtel).
