Last Night, Calvin Klein — This Morning, Algebra

She is 6-foot-1, weighs 125 pounds and has a kind of Pre-Raphaelite-by-way-of-Joni Mitchell hairdo. So she looks every bit the part of a runway model, even if she’s a 16-year-old high school sophomore who also happens to be transgender….In eighth grade, she appeared “Growing Up Trans,” a documentary that was broadcast on PBS stations, in which she talked with her therapist Jean Malpas of the Ackerman Institute about the decision to go on estrogen. Read More

The Daily Beast – It’s Absurd to Claim That Trans Kids Are Being ‘Rushed’ Into Transitioning

Transgender kids are a reliable source of controversy. They are also human beings.

Over the past two years, articles and opinion pieces published in The Wall Street Journal, Wired, Pacific Standard, New York magazine, and more have questioned the provision of health care and parental support to transgender children—especially the reversible and non-medical practice of social transition, or allowing a child to live and dress as a gender different from the one they were assigned at birth. Read More

I was patting myself on the back for getting a six-out-of-six score on true/false questions about gender identity and societal norms on a new corporate “Gender IQ” course when a video segment stopped me in my tracks.

In the segment, Michael Kimmel, a SUNY Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Stony Brook University in New York, was arguing that gender identity does not develop as we mature, as I always thought, but starts at birth and is effectively set in stone at that early stage. “From the moment we’re born, we’re steered in one direction or another,” he said.  Huffington Post – A Night of a Thousand Genders

‘Girls Toys’ and ‘Boys Toys’ read the two signs hanging above separate display cases at my local Duane Reade store during Christmas last year — the former displaying rows of pink and purple ponies and dolls, the latter filled with blue and green action figures and racing cars. Standing there, two questions immediately came to mind: ‘Why do we need to be told which toys are appropriate for girls and boys?’ and ‘Why are toys even categorized according to a child’s gender?’ But, there was still a more crucial question that even I, a life-long feminist, did not think to ask: “Are there really only two genders?” Read More

The faux-tograph came with a shrieking headline: “Bruce’s Story: My Life as a Woman.”
