The purpose of Structural Family Therapy (SFT) is to empower families that experience challenges in raising their children. This workshop analyzes examples from Salvador Minuchin and other structural therapists’ work with families in outpatient, inpatient, and social services settings to show how SFT’s foundational beliefs and values about families and the role of therapy guide a structural family therapist’s in setting the goal of treatment, assessing the dysfunctional relational patterns that affect the child’s wellbeing, and uncovering and mobilizing the underutilized family strengths that allow for a healthier relational context for the child.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Develop understanding of core beliefs and values guiding structural family therapy.
- Develop the ability to identify the contextual and relational dynamics that maintain problematic family interactions.
- Learn how to activate underutilized family strengths to elicit a healthier relational context.
Who Should Attend:
Mental health professionals, therapists, social workers, counselors, psychologists, and marriage and family therapists who work with children and families.
