The Ackerman Institute for the Family was founded in 1960 and is one of the premier institutions for family therapy treatment, and one of the most highly regarded training facilities for family therapists in the United States. Position Summary:

The Human Resources Generalist will run the daily functions of Human Resources including recruiting, benefits administration, employee relations, performance management, payroll, leave management, onboarding, offboarding, and enforcing company policies and practices. The qualified candidate will report to the Vice President of Finance and administration and oversee all employee lifecycle functions.

Essential Job Functions:

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments. This may include anti-harassment training, professional licensure, and other certifications.
  • Manage onboarding and orientation for all new Ackerman participants—including employees, interns, students, and volunteers—ensuring paperwork, logistics, and compliance are completed efficiently. Partner with department leaders to provide clear expectations, resources, and support so each new cohort is welcomed, integrated, and set up for success
  • Recruits, interviews, and facilitates the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
  • Conducts or acquires background checks and employee eligibility verifications.
  • Coordinate new hire onboarding process, including paperwork, orientation, and introductions to company culture.
  • Manage employee data and maintain accurate HR records in payroll system.
  • Conduct exit interviews to gather feedback on employee departures.
  • Manage employee benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
  • Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
  • Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and managers, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
  • Attends and participates in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
  • 3-5 years experience as a Human Resources Generalist preferred.
  • Proven experience in all aspects of HR functions, including recruitment, employee relations, benefits, and compliance.
  • Experience with processing payroll a plus.
  • Strong understanding of employment laws and regulations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to details.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information in a professional manner and must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Can-do positive attitude and team orientation, with ability to interact with diverse people at all levels.

Work Environment:

  • This position will be in-person, based out of The Ackerman Institute’s New York, NY location, 4 – 5 days per week (25 hours per week).

Compensation:

  • $38.00-$40.00 Hour
