Expired Microaggressions in Psychotherapy: How Implicit Bias May Hinder Cultural Responsiveness [Online]

This online workshop will help participants identify ways in which therapeutic spaces perpetuate racial microaggressions, both within the general practice of therapy and within the clinician-client relationship. The first step to dismantling this insidious form of racism is to make it visible. The workshop will bring to light ways in which well-intentioned actions and attitudes may be discriminatory and deleterious to the healing efforts of clients of color.

Participants will be presented with real-life incidents that illustrate the disguised and problematic dynamics of racial microaggressions, and ways to overcome these harmful interactions with clients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Increase therapists’ capacity to recognize racial microaggressions in themselves and others.
  • Learn to understand racial microaggressions’ averse impact on clients of color.
  • Gain accountability in taking remedial action to overcome racial biases that lead to microaggressions.
