This online workshop focuses on the urgent need to address under resourced and underserved families with strength- based frames of cultural diversity and social and racial equity. The latest developments in a multidimensional eco systemic and postmodern framework will be presented for practitioners working with a variety of cultural groups, including mainstream ones. The framework presented integrates cultural humility and awareness of power differentials to increase practitioners’ awareness of the role their sociocultural and racial assumptions and preferences play in the therapeutic encounter.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn updated concepts and tools of a multidimensional ecological pproach for assessment and treatment practices with low income socially and racially diverse families
- Learn to conduct clinical practices with specific goals and techniques to help families repair bonds strained by contextual stressors precipitated by immigration and inequality
- Focus self-examination on the part of the provider about personal and professional biases that may affect one’s work with families
Presenter:
Celia Jaes Falicov, PhD, is an internationally known family therapy author, teacher and clinician. She is Clinical Professor of Family and Public Health and Director of Mental Health Services at the Student Run Free Clinics of the University of California San Diego. Past President, American Family Therapy Academy. She has pioneered writings on integrating cultural, immigration and sociopolitical perspectives in family therapy theory, practice and training and has received many professional awards for this work. Her recent books are Latino Families in Therapy, 2nd edition (2014) and the co-authored Multiculturalism and Diversity in Clinical Supervision (2014). Dr Falicov’s most recent articles (2020) focus on centering the voice of socioeconomically disadvantaged families in clinical practice; flexibility and solidarity in services to under resourced immigrants.
