We have all been socialized to ideas about emotion that don’t align with research or lived experience. Common beliefs such as, “If I feel too much, I will get overwhelmed,” “I shouldn’t feel negative emotions like anger,” or “I don’t feel much, and that’s probably better,” often shape how we relate to ourselves and others.
In this 60-minute introductory online workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of emotional awareness. We will define what emotions are, distinguish between core emotions and defensive emotions, and explore how core emotions can guide wise action. Participants will also learn how we protect ourselves from feeling and how these defenses can unintentionally cut us off from important emotional energy.
Using a clear, accessible, body-based approach, the workshop introduces simple practices for slowing down, noticing bodily sensations, and reconnecting with emotions in everyday life. No prior clinical training is required.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Will be able to distinguish between core affect and defensive affect.
- Will be able to name at least five defenses to emotion and how they function to inhibit awareness of affect
- Will be able to describe and use at least 3 strategies for connecting to and identifying core affect.
Who Should Watch
This introductory workshop is appropriate for parents, caregivers, and individuals, as well as clinicians and trainees, who want a clear, practical foundation for understanding emotions and using emotional awareness to improve relationships, communication, and personal well-being.
