The online synchronous course, “Integrating Sex Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFTC),” is in partial fulfillment of the additional 60 credit hours required by AASECT to become a certified sex therapist (CST). Specifically, it addresses area C, “Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems.” This course focuses on the use of EFTC, an evidenced-based practice model, in working with couples experiencing intimacy and sexuality issues. An overview of the EFTC model will be presented including assessment, de-escalation, restructuring and consolidation along with a parallel track for integrating sex therapy concepts and clinical strategies within the EFTC treatment.
Learning objectives for the course are as follows:
- Attend to interaction with each partner
- Develop a relational hypothesis
- Assess power and privilege dynamic within couple’s relationship
- Facilitate open, honest and effective communication
- Develop awareness of underlying emotional wounds and needs
- Teach active listening skills
- Foster validation and empathy
- Promote fair fighting and negotiating skills
Meet the Instructor:
Marjorie Nightingale, PhD, JD, LMFT, CST is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Washington, DC with a specialty practice in couples and sex therapy. She received her MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from LaSalle University, and PhD in Couple and Family Therapy from Drexel University where her research focused on developing racially sensitive interventions for African American couples. Dr. Nightingale completed her post-graduate sex therapy training at Council for Relationships and also has extensive training and experience with emotionally focused therapy for couples (EFT). Dr. Nightingale spent several years as a family law and child welfare attorney in Baltimore where she worked with marginalized populations. As a scholar-practitioner, she has a special interest in addressing the intersection of sex and race in therapy for people of color.
