Expired Loving While Black [Online]

This online workshop will cover in-depth considerations which are relevant to treating couples of African descent. Issues to be covered include contextual issues, Self of the Therapist considerations, sociohistorical information, and relevant empirical research data. Dr. Henry will provide an overview of the creation and maintenance of romantic relationships in the Black community from slavery until modern day. The presentation will provide sociohistorical context, theoretical understanding and practical implications for clinicians.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will gain knowledge about how the experience of being born Black in the U.S. contributes to one’s role and ideas about romantic relationships
  • Participants will learn about 2-3 social science theories that can be used to analyze the phenomena of Black love
  • Participants will be offered tools and topics of exploration to cover when treating Black couples in therapy

Presenter:

Racine R. Henry, PhD, LMFT, has been practicing psychotherapy since 2008 and currently holds a license in Marriage and Family Therapy in New York and is a Clinical Member of AAMFT. Dr. Henry holds a dual B.A. in Psychology and Sociology/Social Psychology from Lehigh University, a M.S. in MFT from Valdosta State and a PhD. in Couple and Family Therapy from Drexel. Dr. Henry has done national and international presentations along with publications in peer-reviewed journals, textbooks, and popular media literature. In addition to extensive work with couples, Dr. Henry is experienced in group therapy, family therapy, cultural sensitivity, and treating various mental health diagnoses. Dr. Henry is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, has taught at several universities and worked in a variety of clinical settings.
