Expired When the Music Stops: Understanding the Unique Contributions of Therapy, Mediation and Collaborative Divorce When Marriage Comes To an End

As therapists we often define ourselves by our ability to help clients understand and improve their relationships; at the same time we have much to contribute to relationships that are unbraiding.

In this workshop, participants will learn to use their capacities to come alongside conflict and hold multiple perspectives to help couples at this complex juncture. This workshop will enable you to help clients make sense of the emotional turmoil they experience, consider the usefulness of divorce therapy, and have an informed discussion about the options available to reach settlement, including an introduction to mediation and collaborative divorce. Participants will have exposure to videotapes, experiential exercises and distilled information that will help them support their clients at this critical juncture.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand and respond to the impact of disrupted attachment when clients separate and divorce
  • Learn to structure a time limited divorce therapy to help clients reach closure
  • Help clients consider their process choices when they prepare to divorce
